The British Virgin Islands are situated in the Caribbean, 80 km (50 miles) east of Puerto Rico and 1770 km (1100 miles) south-east of Miami, Florida.
The British Virgin Islands have had a varied history over the centuries. They were occupied by the Spanish, Dutch and British in turn and were popular hideouts for pirates and buccaneers. In 1967 the British Virgin Islands became a dependent territory of the United Kingdom and were granted full territorial status and a ministerial form of self-government by the British Crown.
Virgin Gorda, the second largest island in the group, has natural beauty and charm with unspoiled scenery, friendly people, an idyllic climate, safe swimming and pristine white sandy beaches. Saba Wind villa is situated on a hillside in Leverick Bay at the north end of the island and has spectacular views overlooking the sheltered waters of North Sound. The main town, Spanish Town, is at the south end of the island just 6 miles away, a 25 minute drive by car or taxi along a picturesque and winding road with superb views of adjacent islands.
The British Virgin Islands are on Atlantic Standard Time (GMT/UTC minus 3 hours).
Currency in the British Virgin Islands is the US dollar. Travellers cheques and major credit cards are accepted in most – but not all – businesses.
